Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries set their own monument regulations — height limits, base requirements, acceptable materials, and installation methods — and these rules vary significantly from one institution to the next. A granite tombstone that meets every requirement at one Morris County cemetery may require adjustment at another in Bergen County. Granite Memorial Shop reviews the current regulations at your cemetery before production begins on every order, ensuring your stone is built to the correct specifications from the start.

Foundation Requirements

Upright granite tombstones in New Jersey require concrete foundations poured below the frost line — typically 12 to 24 inches depending on monument height and the cemetery's specification. Our installation crew prepares foundations, cures them to the required schedule, and then sets the finished stone using mechanical leveling equipment. We photograph the installed monument and send the image to your family.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-affiliated cemeteries throughout Morris County and the surrounding counties carry denomination-specific monument guidelines beyond standard dimension rules. Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Orthodox institutions all have institutional histories that can influence acceptable monument styles, finishes, and imagery. Granite Memorial Shop is familiar with these conventions and navigates them on your behalf before production begins.

Our Collection

Our Headstones Collection

Headstone

A granite tombstone is a durable, carved granite marker — upright, slant, or flat — placed at a grave to identify the person interred and to carry the memory of that person forward in permanent form. At Granite Memorial Shop, granite tombstones are produced in all three configurations and in a range of American-made granite colors, including the deep black of India Black, the classic gray of Mountain Gray, and the warm reddish-brown of Dakota Mahogany. Upright tombstones range from 24 to 48 inches in height in most New Jersey cemeteries; slant markers present a lower profile on a flat base; flat markers lie flush with the surrounding ground. The upright, slant, and flat styles all suit different cemetery settings and family preferences, and all are produced to cemetery-compliant specifications. Lettering, borders, faith symbols, and portrait work are incorporated as hand-carved elements by our Morris County artisans, with your approval of a scaled design drawing before any production begins.

Granite Options

American-made granite is the material at the core of every Granite Memorial Shop tombstone. Domestic quarrying provides consistent quality — known hardness ratings, controlled porosity, reliable surface yield — that supports fine carving and long-term weather resistance in New Jersey's outdoor conditions. India Black granite produces the strongest contrast for carved lettering. Mountain Gray offers a classic, versatile appearance. Dakota Mahogany adds warmth. All are available for comparison at our Morris County showroom.

Custom Design Process

Every granite tombstone design begins with a consultation in English, Russian, or Polish at our Morris County showroom or by phone. We gather all design details — monument style, stone color, inscription content, cemetery's dimensional requirements — and produce a scaled drawing for your approval before production begins. No stone is touched until you are certain the design is right.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Six stages define every granite tombstone at Granite Memorial Shop. One: the family consultation, documenting all design preferences and the cemetery's rules. Two: the scaled design drawing, produced and approved before production. Three: American-made granite selection and preparation. Four: hand-carving of all letters, symbols, and decorative elements by our Morris County artisans. Five: finishing — fills, polish, and inspection against the drawing. Six: delivery, foundation preparation by our crew, installation and leveling, and the installation photograph sent to your family.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My grandfather had a Granite Memorial Shop stone placed for my grandmother decades ago. When my grandfather passed, we returned to Granite Memorial Shop. The quality of their work, the patience of their team, the care they brought — all of it was exactly what we remembered. The granite tombstone they made stands beautifully beside the one they made fifty years ago.” — George, Warren County NJ
